Going From Zero to Start is the Hardest Part.

You have to have effective tools to manage the discomfort of change. This will be required to create something real, lasting, and meaningful. Yes, you'll need to have a belief that you can have what you want but most of the time you won't really believe. You won't really believe you can change until you do.
You'll need to create a vision for yourself and your life long before you feel like you have clarity. Belief and clarity don't fall from the sky. They don't hit you like a bolt of lightning. They build. They build up over time spent questioning, trying, planning out the first few small steps, anticipating the obstacles and taking the steps. Paying attention to what works, what doesn't, what you want to do differently. Failing fast. Learning to not make that mean you're a failure.

But there'll be lots of times when you will think it means that.  It’ll suck.

That will make it seem tricky to keep connected to your vision. You’ll get distracted by things like uncertainty and doubt.

This is important to recognize and learn how to manage otherwise when the steps feel hard or like they're not working, you'll stop. You can't create change only in your head but you have to stay connected to the vision. You have to take the steps but you won't always want to.

Find somebody who knows how to guide you through that part. Find somebody who knows how to help you see that it's not about running away from something "bad", it's about running towards something better. Going from zero to start is the hardest part.  Then it’s about momentum.  Then it gets good!  It’s a bit like getting a recommendation from a friend like this…

Friend: ”Hey Christine, you’ve got to watch this new Netflix show!”

Christine: “Awesome okay! Tell me everything!”

Friend: “Well, it’s really slow and kinda terrible for the first few episodes but it gets really good after that.  But you have to watch every episode or you won’t know what’s going on.  Stick with it.  I promise it gets better!”

Yeah, so it’s a bit like that. Get through the first episodes.  Stick with it. Then the rest is easy and pretty awesome.

You can decide to not miss out on something great just because it might also be hard.

When it comes to career change, you don't have to leave everything behind like a used up teabag. You can keep the parts you love, you can keep what you worked hard to build and learn and keep adding more.

When you look back some day you'll be able to connect the dots.  You'll be able to see that what felt like missteps and false starts were important.  They were necessary.  You learned, you grew, you evolved.  You're always unraveling.  Learning and unlearning.  Testing and experimenting.

You are an exceptionally complex creature.  Please believe me when I say you know what you're doing.  You can cope, you can figure things out, you can make time, you can focus, you can follow a plan and not your mood, you can get curious, you can challenge your thoughts, you can practice believing, you can practice becoming more gentle with yourself.  You can focus on progress.  You can celebrate a small win.  You can do something hard by letting other things be easy.

You can decide to not miss out on something great just because it might also be hard.

Let's get to work!
