When you think you’re stuck it feels terrible. So you wait, hoping something will change on it’s own so you feel better. You think, when I feel less stuck, then I’ll do things differently.
That might work and it also usually doesn’t.
Recognizing the relationship between your thoughts, your mood, + your behaviour can help you start to notice that you’re not as powerless to your environment as you might believe. You have plenty of options even if you aren’t able to see them clearly now or if you don’t “feel” like exercising them.
If you feel stuck there are going to be things you won’t feel like doing. The list of those things probably includes feeling certain things, and behaving in certain ways.
In some ways this is the greatest news ever. Why?
Because there are things you can do to activate your own behaviour even when you don’t feel like it. It’s even better news that none of this relies on someone else, you can do it while physical distancing, and it will make you feel better.
Are you putting off feeling better until you feel better?
Think about that for a minute.
Of course you have fears. If you're waiting around to stop being afraid of change, you'll probably be waiting for a very long time. Maybe forever.
You always have and you always will be afraid to do things you've never done or already know are hard or uncomfortable. You get to decide how much you want your fear to drive your life. You can totally decide to make all of your choices from this place. This has likely been helpful in some ways.
But is it always?
How you make one decision tends to be how you make all of your decisions.
Unless you decide not to.
If you're making decisions from this place and it's making your life smaller than you'd like or it's closing off hope and possibility, or simply making you feel terrible, I hope it's helpful to be reminded...
You can change! You absolutely can. You can feel better. Better about work, better about life. You don't need to feel happy and positive all day, every day but you can start with making a few different choices and see where that takes you.
It usually leads to somewhere pretty cool.
